Notes From the Lines
This session takes a “notes from the front lines” look at what it really means to lead IT and cybersecurity teams, focusing less on technology and more on the people behind it. While tools, frameworks and controls are designed around expected behaviours, the reality is that people do not always behave as systems assume they will. Effective leadership therefore depends on understanding, influencing and managing the behaviours that ultimately determine whether technology and security strategies succeed.
Drawing on practical experience and stories from far beyond the traditional technology world, the session explores lessons from Notre Dame, aviation incidents, bridge construction and even McDonald’s ice cream machines. These seemingly unrelated examples provide a memorable lens through which to examine human behaviour, decision-making, accountability and organisational culture. Attendees will leave with practical insights into creating environments where the right behaviours become easier, more natural and more sustainable across IT and cybersecurity teams.
About Finian
Finian Massa is Strategic Marketing Manager at ICT Solutions, where he sets the product and go to market vision for the firm's cybersecurity, cloud, and AI practice. He holds an M.Eng in AI and Cybernetics from the University of Reading, earned back when telling people you worked in AI got you a polite change of subject rather than a follow-up question.
His work spans AI adoption and cybersecurity strategy, and he holds an elected seat on Malta's National Cybersecurity Consultation Council, representing the country's cybersecurity service providers.
When he's not immersed in tech, he's usually in an airport queue explaining to security why his suitcase contains hundreds of tiny painted soldiers, travelling across Europe for competitive tabletop wargaming tournaments. He maintains the two disciplines are basically identical: threat modelling, resource allocation, and accepting that the dice owe you nothing.
