Session Outline:
The Meshiverse or The Revolution of the Little Radios

Modern society relies heavily on centralized communication networks, yet when these systems fail, communities can quickly become isolated. This session explores how open-source, low-power radio technologies can provide resilient, independent communication channels that complement existing infrastructure and strengthen community self-reliance.

Attendees will discover "The Meshiverse," a decentralized communication layer powered by projects such as Reticulum, Meshtastic, and MeshCore. Using affordable LoRa radio hardware, these platforms enable peer-to-peer networks that operate without internet connectivity or traditional telecommunications infrastructure.

The session examines practical applications including off-grid coordination using ATAK and CivTAK, search and rescue operations, maritime communications, and localized tracking in areas with limited cellular coverage. It will also showcase real-world experiments connecting Malta and Sicily using low-power open hardware, highlighting both the technical challenges and possibilities.

Through practical examples, this talk demonstrates how open systems can enhance digital resilience, promote digital literacy, and safeguard the ability to communicate when conventional networks are unavailable.
